You will need a external hard drive as big or bigger than the drive you are trying to back up.
You have not said what backup software you are using.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner by Bombich https://bombich.com/ $40.00. You could also use Super Duper.
Both of these products will make a complete bootable backup or clone of you existing hard drive, including your recovery partition.
Once you have made the backup, if your hard drive was ever to fail, you could simply boot to the external backup drive.
If you are backing up because you are in the process of upgrading hard drive to a SSD, you could put the SSD in an external case and clone your existing drive to SSD, test it and then replace the HD when you are confident it is working ok.
P.S. External hard drives are very inexpensive nowadays. Here is an example: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-my-passport-ultra-1tb-external-usb-3-0-2-0-portab le-hard-drive-classic-black/7869174.p?id…

Jan 29, 2016 4:23 AM in response to KimUserNameby CRLV,External hard drive I used to create a disk image is, WD - My passport with 1TB, completely empty. I'm not using any software, just disk utility. Can that difference result of compression option I choose for create the disk image? I'm trying that option due to my mac been unable to boot by itself. "Repair disk" or "repair permissions" are useless. Option available is "backup all the data you can, clean disk, reformat and and install original SO, which is snow leopard. Can that option, through disk image, reliable when you don't want to lose any files from your mac HD?

What operation system and version number are you using?
Have you booted into Safe mode or Recovery mode?
Are you using Time Machine to backup your data?
Do you have a current backup?
When you said you made a disk image, did you get any messages when it was complete, indicating you were successful?

Jan 29, 2016 5:50 AM in response to KimUserNameby CRLV,MacBook Pro 13inch, year 2010. Actually I was using Mavericks version 10.9.
I have tried to boot on safe mode, it start's to fill that bar bellow and then suddenly turn black and switch off.
Now I used "C" key when boot.
I never configured Time Machine on Mac which is a mistake, I know now.
I don't have any previous backup.
All went ok on the disk image process creation, tests went all right as well.

Also another thought. If your hard drive has a lot of important data you may be able to read it by putting it into an external case and connecting it up to another mac using USB. Just a thought.
