Maybe you should ask the "retail store."

Jan 29, 2016 12:17 PM in response to Ralph9430by zakiu,From what I'm reading online, they are written on in the manufacturing process during what is called a "burn-in" period and then zero'd out by the firmware, because there's no way to do QA on the drive without testing the hard drive to make sure it works. As a side, note, I doubt the employee at the Apple store will know anything aside from how to sell me an apple watch and order an iced latte. I'm not sure it is worth the hour getting there and getting back to ask.

Jan 29, 2016 12:35 PM in response to zakiuby JimmyCMPIT,in data forensics classes its not uncommon to take a new hard drive from a shelf, unwrap the shrink wrap and remove the boxing, connect and find data on it with a deep scan. If a manufacturer has to replace a chip or a connector it's a lot less cost to a company than throwing the whole thing out, and I'm not taking about referbished drives, this is not uncommon on new drives from the factory from a host of distributors.
