Q: URLs not working in Safari or Mail after iOS 9.2.1

After updating my iPad Air 2 iOS 9.2.1, I experienced Safari crashing when trying to open a new tab. I solved this problem by disabling Search Engine Suggestions and Safari Suggestions in Settings, as recommended. However now, if I've done a search, I cannot open any of the links in that search. If I type a specific URL in the Search Box, then I can open the page, but am unable to sign in, use any links from that page, etc. Also, I find that I am unable to open any URL links that I receive in Mail and tapping on a link then locks up Mail... I have done a full sync to my iMac, which can sometimes rectify a problem, but it hasn't helped in this instance.

Has anyone else experienced this?

    HI,

I was having the same problem with my IPad 4 generation, I then tried to reset my device  and via Apple download software to repair the issue, however this still did not solve the problem, however I have fixed it by connecting my device to ITunes and manually did a restore back up and it has fixed the problem.

Definitely being annoyed by this issue as wel: 2 iPhone 6s', 1 iPad and 1 iPad mini affected.

So annoyed (also with myself of course) that it always takes so long before I figure out there's something structurally wrong.

Many hours later, you go online searching for answers, and then of course you stumble upon pages like these where you notice it's a global issue. It's not just me! Eureka! Or maybe not, 'cause there is no solution!

Well at least I expect from a company like Apple to send me a (short but clear) warning message about this, before I do waste my precious time trying to fix the unfixable. Kinda like I get a rough-weather-warning from my weather app before the storm breaks. I'd even be thankful to get an Apple company note WHEN the actual **** breaks loose.

But dear Apple, you DO have a responsibility towards your customers. And this not only means promising the world at a keynote speech and producing great products, but also committing to your loyal share of customers when troubles arise. And talking is a great way of communicating to us. Putting your head in the ground as ostriches do, is not.

Today this problem started for mee too on my iPad Air 2 which I updated to iOS 9.3 a few days ago. Everything was working fine after the update but today I encountered these problems.

Maybe the use of some specific apps (or the combination of) triggers the problem.

A Couple of days before the realise of IOS 9.3 the result inks from Google searches in Safari stopped working.  Clicking on them does nothing.  I have neither installed or removed any apps.  How can this be?  It's almost as if there is a virus in my ipad!!!  I updated to IOS 9.3 and still the same problem.  I have  disabled javascript but does not solve the issue.  I cannot click on any links!!!   browsing  almost useless !!  How can this just start happening with no updates???  I used to have confidence in Apple products but my IPad Air 2 and iPhone 5s are now crippled by this bug/virus.   Seriously annoyed and why does Apple not say ANYTHING???  Is this the way for an iconic company to act???

I wasn't aware that the word h-e-l-l is an offensive 4-letter word that needs to be replaced by four stars.

It's not just booking.com. It's a combination of apps that use browser extensions.

As I posted prior. apps like Yelp onedrive google drive cause the issue as well.

You can delete these apps and the phone will start working or will have to just wait for an update.

I did a clean install as new for a 3rd time last night. I only installed two of these apps rebooted and it broke. Removed one and it worked again. Installed and removed the other..worked again.

I think I have a clue.  The swcd process that is crashing has to do with "shared web credentials" which is how one app can ask another app (e.g. Facebook, Google, etc.) to log you in.  Basically it saves those login permissions in the iCloud keychain.  I'm curious if people go into Settings > iCloud and see if Keychain is turned on?  It was in some sort of pending state for me.  I used the "Forgot code" button and then cleared the keychain and set a new code to fix it.  I'm not saying that fixed the problem because at this point it is working anyway because of my latest fix attempt.  All too many times I've thought I fixed it only to see it come back again, take this with a big grain of salt, but may latest fix (as of last night) was to restore my phone with the older of the two 9.2.1 versions which Apple is still signing.

Thank you. This fix works for some but not for others, perhaps those dependent upon Javascript as you mentioned. For now, I am grateful for the help it does provide. Apple better have people on this 24/7 until it's fixed. It's a huge problem, as everyone else has also noted.

For me only happens in the iphone 6 with IOS 9.2.1. I did a factory reset with the Mac , making a backup and restoring it again.

Doing this, the problem remains so I reset again and restore an oldest backup in the iCloud. When finished the iphone works fine

    again.

I upgraded to the 9.3 and still works fine.

Ive gathered the appropariate information from AppleCare on how to addresss this issue appropriately.

The temporary fix is to follow these instructions:

    1.  Perform a hard reset on the device (Hold down the home button and the on/off button until you see the black screen).

    2.  After successufully hard resetting the device check your hyperlinks in Safari to see if they respond.

If they don't, you need to turn off JavaScript on the device:  Settings > Safari > Advanced > JavaScript.

    3.  If this combo doesn't resolve the issue, the official instruction is to keep your device up to date in case a future release fixes the issue.
