Latest version of Logic Pro X has stopped my Launch Control XL from working

I've been using Launch Control XL to control mixer / pan / sends and transport for the last 6 months without any problems. It's plugged into the Mac via USB and effectively sends midi notes which I have mapped to the controls I want.

Last week I upgraded to the latest version of LPX and the controller has stopped controlling. Instead, if I hit the mute or solo buttons on the Launch Control it plays midi notes on whatever track I have selected on screen. In other words instead of controlling the mixer the midi notes are being passed through to my MIDI setup.

What has the latest update done to change this and now do I change it back? Please help!

as an aside the playbar now does a silly forward / backwards dance when 'catch playhead' is set and the track is playing. Is the latest version a bit flaky?

Reset Logic's CS preferences and reinstall anything your LCXL needs......

You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

  1. Quit Logic Pro X
  2. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  3. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  4. Press the Go button.
  5. Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this.
  6. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
  7. Restart the computer.

Note: If you cannot find any of the files listed above, you didn’t follow the instruction correctly! 🙂

Well, if you had to configure it yourself manually, then yes.... However, doesn't the XL editor allow you to save out your configs so you could reload them again, later? I don't know myself as I have never used the XL nor it's Editor, hence my question...

As for will you have to do this after every update? I don't know.. it depends why it 'broke' in the first place.....

Opinion: Given the XL's purpose isn't really designed around working with another DAW apart from Live.. and the fact it does.. is sort of a by product of it's design.... it's hard to know what the future will hold...

well I have tried to do this but the .plist file in question really isn't there, and yes I had quit Logic Pro X and I was in the right folder (there were other .plist files just not the right one)

this is infuriating and is everything I hate about music software... I want to be creating music but instead I'm bug fixing.

Incidentally don't buy that launch control only works as a by-product, it's sold as compatible with logic....

sorry to sound ungrateful....

If you couldnt find it then you were in the wrong place.. as those two plists are created automatically every time you start Logic if they are not there initially.

Please follow the instructions exactly as written.. Don't try to find the files by any other means and use copy and paste to ensure you get the paths exactly right.... ensuring you included the Tilde (~) symbol that precedes the path...... as this is the User Library not the System Library.... and you wont find those files if you went to the System Library.

Note: there are lots of plists in both the System and User Preferences folders....

If you are sure that's what you are doing, please right/control left click on the Preferences folder and choose Get Info..

Then take a screenshot of the Get Info information and post it up here please.. using the camera icon in the reply window..

As I said, the XL's main purpose is as a controller for Live.. That is what it is primarily designed to do.... The fact it works with other DAWs is just a side line to it's primary design purpose... as you can tell by all it's marketing material 🙂

Thanks for all the info.

Ultimately the plist thing thing worked, though it meant remapping every single controller again from scratch. Despite the detailed instructions I did mess them up first time around because I am an idiot.

once mapped the launch control is reasonably effective and I use it in combination with logic remote on the iPad to try and give me as much physical control as possible. Being a Synth freak I'm used to having lots of knobs at my disposal!! Given the previous points that this isn't the primary design use of the launch control can anyone recommend a good physical controller that is designed for proper integration with logic?

thanks

You and me both Steven.. but that's the way I learn.. I mess up.. realize I messed up because Im an idiot and try my best to learn from that mistake... 🙂

Anyhow.....

The only hardware controllers I use these days... that are set up specifically for Logic.. are my Nektar P6 keyboard and P1 Controller... using their new Logic Pro X integration update.

Other than that I use Logic Remote and the ever excellent and very flexible TouchOSC apps on my iPads to remotely control and manipulate Logic's (and other plugin's) functions..

Cheers..

You might find watching these, of interest...

and more importantly and recently... after the latest update...

The main bonus is that Nektar's integration does not need to wrap any plugins...or alter anything in Logic as it works at a much core level.... while at the same time allowing for full CC and NRPN control of external hardware.
