Q: I just got an iphone 5s and am unable to upload itunes music from my laptop to the phone

I recently got an iphone 5s and am unable to upload my music from itunes on my mac book pro to the phone.  The error message states that the phone needs a newer version of itunes?

Yes, the iPhone requires a newer version of iTunes ... on your Mac.

 

Your profile says you are running OS X 10.5 (Leopard), which is now eight years old.  Is this correct?  If so, that is the source of your problem.

 

The current iOS version (9.2.1) requires a current version of iTunes (12.3.2).  iTunes 12.3 requires at least OS X 10.8.5.

 

So you probably have a whole lot of OS X upgrading to do.  To see if it's even possible to bring your Mac to the current OS X (El Capitan), see:

    Thanks.  Things are getting very complex in apple world.  I just finished word processing a report on a very old apple that works well for me, as doe the MBpro.  Forced upgrades in hardware that otherwise works well infuriates me.  Thanks for you wisdom! Mary

    Personally, while not necessary to re-purchase newer versions of Apple hardware each time a revision is introduced, I do recommend doing software updates / upgrades when they are introduced.  That way, instead of a massive jump in software every few years, you get incremental changes in software every few months, which I believe are much easier to understand and adapt to.

    I don't think we have the 8 mg storage need for El Capitan (specs below).  Is there something before that but after leopard with lower requirements that might work?  THANKS

    No, you need at least 8GB free disk space even for Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8).

    Actually, El Capitan needs 8.8GB.
