i purchased 50GB additional icloud storage but it is still showing 5GB

I purchased 50GB of iCloud storage because my iPad and iPhone 6s continue to tell me that the backup cannot complete due to not enough storage on iCloud. The purchase showed up on my checking account but it still says only 5GB of iCloud storage on my phone and iPad. How do I get it to update the storage?
