You can use iCloud for everything but your devices showing up.

Syncing contacts and having your computer show up under devices are 2 entirely separate things. The contacts can sync without the computer showing up.
I'm not sure what you mean. I don't use Google products so I can't offer any help with that.
Since you're already running Mavericks on your iMac, is there a reason you are reluctant to upgrade any further? I can think of no reason to use Mavericks any longer.
