Q: Finder search not giving accurate results in El Capitian 10.11.3

When I perform a simple search in one folder = containing only .docx files, I am not getting accurate results.

Example:  I search for a word = I type the word "City" in the search box.

I either get partial results = not all the files that contain that word appear or zero results, when I know for sure there are files that contain the word that don't appear in the search list.  As stated they are all .docx files, same format even font etc.

Why is the search not recognizing the word city in certain files?

PS - I've reindexed as suggested in some post on the web as well as in this community. Repaired permissions etc.

Not sure if this is important, but the folders and files in question are in OneDrive folders.  But same thing happens elsewhere too.

This has been happening for a few months now, but I haven't had time to really look into it.  Not sure if any recent updates affected this.  But it worked fine up until then.

It's pure speculation at what actually kicked started Spotlight, but it's also possible that you didn't give Spotlight enough time to fully index your drive.

Depending on the size of your drive, this can take hours. Until this process is finished, Spotlight won’t know the contents of your disks.

Note: You can tell if Spotlight is still in progress in Activity Monitor. Open Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities and type in md in the search filter. You should see mdworker32 and mdworker. The file, mdworker32 is for Outlook and mdworker is for system. There will be multiple incidences for md.

I don't think I'm speculating.  The internal drive did not reindex until I put both drives into the private section and then removed the internal drive.  I checked both times immediately to see if spotlight was re-indexing.  When I did the internal drive alone... nothing.  When I did both, leaving the external private, it started indexing right away as soon as I removed the internal drive.  Also, with the SSD I noticed it goes very fast = took about 20 minutes.

Still, I am a little curious why the external would even be an issue.  I mean, "on paper", it shouldn't matter. Right?

UPDATE:  The problem seems to be .docx files.   For some reason spotlight won't search or doesn't see .docx files.   I installed Microsofts Office 360 because I like work and one note.  I tried using Onedrive but to do that it wanted to convert my .doc files to .docx files. All of the sudden search can't find the info.  I changed them back to .doc files and there they were.

The problem is with .docx files. Spotlight doesn't index them .  Found out this problem has been around since 2008.  Its a weird problem.  Sometimes it will find them. Sometimes it will find some.  Then not at all.
