I have a nonworking MacBook Pro and a macbook that I would like to recycle through Apple, but I'm nervous to send them off with all the information on the hard drive. I tried hooking the computer up to my iMac using firewire, but the iMac did not recognize it.
How old is the computer? You could remove the hard drive and deal with it separately.
You could also see if the recycling program mentions the issue.

I have a late 2008 MacBook and replaced the hard drive. It required a Torx 6 screwdriver and a Phillips, I believe a #000. You only need the Torx if a new drive will be installed by another user. Check on the OWC macsales.com web site or iFixit web site for machine specific instructions.
