During the first part of setup. there is an option to select a language. if you passed that part already, unplug your apple tv, wait 3-5 minutes, and then plug back in and wait for startup. if it doesnt go to select a language, then contact apple support.

Are you saying your remote doesn't work or that you have already selected Spanish by mistake and don't know how to revert.
Try sliding your finger on the touch pad. If no response, take it back and get another ATV.
thats what he probably ment
Thanks for responding. Yes, I accidentally selected spanish during initial setup and am unable to revert to the startup screen. I've tried unplugging the Apple tv (overnight) and using my iPhone and iPad but they are not recognized by the Apple tv.

TTux for the suggestion. Unfortunately the screen was locked in Spanish so I couldn't get to the menu to change to English. Fortunately, my son-in-law came by and was able to use my old Apple TV remote to get back to English. I am still curious as to why the Apple TV did not recognize my iPhone or iPad.

Select the icon on the screen with the gear symbol on it, select the top option in the list, scroll down the list on the next page to the second from the bottom setting, this is the language setting. Once you have changed the language back to English, you should be able to navigate to the rest of the settings you need to change or find the restore option and start again.
Sounds like the setup program crashed and froze. Does the new remote work fine now?
Using an iPad or iPhone to control the ATV requires downloading the remote app and to link them to the unit before using them to control it. Since you were still setting up the unit they were not linked.
The old remote uses infrared signals like a TV remote which the new ATV is capable of detecting so it worked without setup.
Ignore my last post, the forums are playing up (again), your last post wasn't visible when I posted. I assume everything is working OK now.
Thanks. Unfortunately the remote was locked and wouldn't allow me to get to the settings to change the language. As I mentioned in a previous post, I was able to use the older remote to make the change and all is working well.

Scott
This does not help. We cannot get to that screen as the initial SETUP is stuck in Spanish!
The initial screen should be the language selection. Here are the steps Set up your Apple TV (4th generation) - Apple Support.
