Why do I have a Spinning beachball when waking from sleep?

When I wake my OS X 10.6.8, 21.5" iMac from sleep it was very slow and there was/is a spinning beachball before it goes to work. Thinking I may have a failing HD II used etresoft to evaluate it and got an "excellent" condition while speeding up my firefox action considerably but the beach ball is still there.

I read mac extremely slow (randomly), memory full, CPU fine

I then ran the etresoft and checked my Console to find several notations like this:

Hi, Goldenbill.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I understand your computer becomes unresponsive when waking from sleep. Make sure to quit any open applications that aren't in use prior to placing your iMac in sleep mode. The article below covers how to quit applications for Yosemite, but the steps do also apply to 10.6.8.

OS X Yosemite: Quit apps

The next step would be going through the troubleshooting information below.

If your Mac doesn't wake when you expect

Your Mac might pause a few seconds before it wakes up. If it doesn't seem to wake at all, check for these possibilities:

  • Your screen brightness might be turned down.
  • If you're using an external display, your display might be turned off.
  • Your Mac might be in safe sleep. To wake from safe sleep, press the power button.
  • Check for a sleep indicator light, if applicable, and make sure that your Mac isn't turned off.

If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

  • Reset the SMC.
  • Reset NVRAM.
  • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
  • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
  • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account.

Thanks OT, this is a great help, unfortunately I've already given "Helped" stars to Allen Eckert and Jason so my thanks will have to be a simple Thanks!. The article covered much that I've been wanting to learn but haven't run across up to now.

My use of his Monitor search returned this:

Last login: Thu Feb 4 11:36:16 on ttys000

xxxxxxx-Computer-1:~ goldenbill$ ~/Library/LaunchAgents

-bash: /Users/goldenbill/Library/LaunchAgents: is a directory

xxxxxxx-Computer-1:~ goldenbill$ ~/Library/LaunchAgents

-bash: /Users/goldenbill/Library/LaunchAgents: is a directory

xxxxxxx-1:~ goldenbill$

When I looked at "/users/goldenbill/Library/LaunchAgents" I get:

com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist

com.apple.FolderActions.folders.plist

Neither of which refers to Genieo.

However, when I do a search in Spotlight I get a couple of Genieo's Uninstall but no Genieo App. Could it be hidden and if so how do I get to it?

The article didn't explain that other than the fact that it could be hidden.

Here's the result of my Spotlight search:

Will a simple "move to trash" clean these out?

Sincerely do appreciate your help!

That will clear up some of the files. However, Spotlight can't search where many of the adware files are located. To find those download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "genieo" in the file name.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there are genieo files hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

Feb 4, 2016 2:26 PM in response to Goldenbill

Again from Spotlight, for "Genio" rather than "Genio"s") I get 12 Makefile's and 18 plists. Plus an .rtf copy of my work on the subject.

My head's spinning! I hope I haven't gone overboard here OT but it seems I've really fallen into Alice's WAnderland. Hope you haven't thrown up your hands. I'll let it rest until I hear from you. Your links have been fabulous.

Having trouble getting my head around this app. It's great but a lot is assumed in the instructions and it takes a lot of research on my part to get it together. However, this is what I have so far. The first image is the FAF result in a full report on Genieo as you can see in the SHOW sections. The second one is a folder I found in my Goldenbill Library folder in a manual search which shows up in the FAF search.User uploaded fileUser uploaded file
