Why is there no option to change side switch to lock rotate on iPhone, when there is on iPad?

I have the option to make the side swith a lock rotate switch rather than for mute on my iPad mini 2, however i cant on my iPhone 5c. They are obviously both on ios 9, but there isnt the same option. Why did apple leave this out?

iPhone 5c, iOS 9.2.1, Second device is iPad mini 2

It's just basically a mute/silent button and we have no option TO CHANGE IT to LOCK ROTATE MODE

Yes, that is how that button functions. That is how it has always functioned on the iPhone. If you would like to see something different, send your feedback to Apple here:

Meanwhile, you can use the rotation lock button in the Control Center.

Hello there TheChapster,

It sounds like your side switch isn't functioning on your iPhone the way it does on your iPad. This is expected behavior. The side switch on the phone has a different function than that of the iPad:

Flip the Ring/Silent switch to put iPhone in ring mode User uploaded file or silent mode User uploaded file.

User uploaded file

In ring mode, iPhone plays all sounds. In silent mode, iPhone doesn’t ring or play alerts and other sound effects (but iPhone may still vibrate).

I can't believe Apple took this out. I turned it to lock rotation because I'm always accidentally flipping that switch and turning off my ringer and miss calls! That's the only reason I used that, I don't care about locking rotation. Ideally I'd like the option to ignore the switch entirely !

They didn't take it out. It was never in an official release of iOS for iPhones.

I meant, why is there no option in setting to change it from mute toggle to rotate toggle, like there is for iPad. I know how to do both of them, but use lock rotate more often.

Because an iPhone and an iPad are different products, and Apple didn't design that feature into the iPhone.

If you'd like to see this feature added, give feedback to Apple in the correct place: www.apple.com/feedback.

I was looking for something else today and came across this...

In iOS 9, there is a way now to change the side switch behaviour, just like on the iPad.

So, I stand corrected.

I recall seeing this in an article somewhere. However, my iPhone 6 updated to 9.2.1 doesn't have this option. I think it may have been something that was in a beta but never made it to final release.
