usb mouse not working after sleep

I had this problem occasionally, but yesterday this problem occurred three times. When I tried to wake up the iMac from sleep mode, the usb mouse no longer worked (even when I tried connecting to multiple USB ports on the back of the monitor. To recover, I had to force the desktop to reset by doing a long power key press. I don't want to do a hard reset to recover because this is not good for the iMac. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am running OS X El Capitan (version 10.11.3).
