Disable "Shut down" from Apple menu?

The on/off button on my MacBook Pro mid-2009 does not work anymore. I accidentally shut down my Mac and could not restart it. After searching the web I eventually managed to restart it by short circuit something inside the computer. I would like to disable "Shut Down" from the Apple menu, so it will not be shut down by accident. Is that possible? If so, how is it done?

This would only solve one of your problems, but it is not a realistic solution.

Get a quote on the repair and go from there:

I had the same problem and the solutions was quite troublesome to find... the commands below worked for me on OS X 10.11.6:

  • sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow ShutDownDisabled -bool true
  • sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow ShutDownDisabledWhileLoggedIn -bool true

Hi,

It is possible, though modifying system files can be dangerous. First of all, make sure you have a backup of your Mac.

Here are a few links that should interest you :

Also, if I may give you an advice, would would be better off replacing your on/off button rather than fiddle with the motherboard each time you computer turns off...

Happy Tweaking !

Thank you for your reply. I will not modify the system as you mentioned it can be dangerous. And I will try not to turn my Mac off, as it works with sleep and restart anyway. That will do for me at the moment. I am just happy that I got it up and running after more than two hours of trying to make a jump start from the inside on my Mac. I am also happy that I did not break anything as I short-circuited almost everything I found inside, until I luckily managed to hit the right circuits.
