Remote app now only works with Apple TV 4

why does the new remote app updated in December now only work with the new Apple TV 4? It used to work with both of my older models (2nd gen and 3rd gen). After the update, it only works with the new Apple TV gen 4. Any help??? All settings are good. Gone through all troubleshooting steps via Apple. No solutions.
