connect iPod 3G firewire 400 to thunderbolt port

Please can anyone tell me how to connect my old 3rd get iPod to my shiny new MacbookPro ?

I have the old firewire 400 to iPod cable so can charge it but cannot connect to the Pro thunderbolt ports.

Usb doesn't sync with these old iPods.

Do I buy a Firewire 800 to thunderbolt connector and look for a 400 to 800 adaptor or will that not work?

Is there another way?

Having bought the Pro I really can't buy a new iPod and anyway it still works perfectly.

Any help gratefully received thank you.

There is a way to connect a 3rd gen iPod to USB, if you can find a special cable that Apple previously sold. It looks like this

and this seems to be a third-party version of it

It has a dock connector that splits off into both a USB connector and FireWire connector. Connect the FireWire connector to your FireWire power adapter (that came with the iPod). Connect the USB connector to the Mac. Connect iPod to dock connector. FireWire supplies the power (to charge battery and operate iPod while connected). Concurrently, the iPod connects to Mac for data using USB.
