Q: In FCP 5 when I colour correct I loose resolutiion

So when I colour correct in FCP5, I loose resolution. Is there any way I can get it back?

Also with the same FCP 5. Can I process video from a black magic camera? How is this captured from an external HD? What is the process for bringing it into FCP for editing?

Final Cut Pro 6, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Compressor should have presets. Don't use an interlaced one...it's tough as 1080i by default is Interlaced. But like 1080i 24p should be fine. I think. Compressor doesn't work on my computer anymore, and I haven't had to deal with DVCPRO HD in many years.

    Hi Shane,

Finally got the Blackmagic footage. It doesn't seem to work. Tried compressor. Following the instructions from the manual I get " FAILED.  Codec not Installed." Used a number codecs from the list and advanced list.  I am assuming it's the the codec for the Black magic footage that is not installed. I may be doing something wrong.  ??

Open the Blackmagic camera file in QuickTime.

Do you see an image/can you play it there?

When it is open in QuickTime go to the menu Window > Show Movie Inspector and report what the inspector says.

Which model of Blackmagic camera shot this?

    MtD

Ah...that's the issue. The Blackmagic shoots ProRes, and you don't have ProRes on your system so you can't even view it. Your system is too old for that new codec. I would hesistate to suggest installing Quicktime 7, as that might have a decoder at least, but I don't think that's compatible with FCP 5, and Quicktime is the heart of FCP.  Mismatching means you might break something.

    OK,

I took the footage to the nle with Mac os 10.6.8. Previious nle was 10.5.8. Same versiion of FCP5.1.4 but different license.(for legal sake)

All files play perfect without compression. FCP5 imports with no problem. I should be able to work this project. It was the OS. Maybe time to update all nle's to Mac OS 10.6.8. Seems to handle the UHD media with no problem. Will keep you informed on progress. Client said the footage was all 4K.

    Thanks again,

    Peter

None of those. The code you are trying to play is one APPLE made, ProRes. You just need a more modern OS and version of Quicktime in order to do it.

If you are going to be dealing with having to cut UHD footage...you are going to have to move on to a more modern system. Trying to do this with FCP 5 will be a huge headache. It wasn't designed when that format existed...nor the proRes codec.

OS 10.6 and FCP 6. That would be the next step up. I have ordered FCP 6. Already have OS 10.6.

Why only go to FCP 6? That's like 9 years old!  FCP 7 is 7 years old, and really the one to be trying to tackle UHD/4K with. Even FCP 6 wasn't made when 4K hit the scene. Well, at least it has proRes, but still. You need to get modern...
