Apple Watch won't re-pair

A couple great months after having my Apple Watch, I noticed that my Apple Watch suddenly was only connecting to iCloud (it had the green cloud symbol), not my iPhone 5. Turning Bluetooth on and off didn't work so I decided to unpair then re-pair my Apple Watch. So I went into my Apple Watch then cleared off all the data and reset it. Then the Apple Watch reset and gave me the option to visually pair with my Apple Watch app. When I attempted to do that, a notification would pop up and say, "Pairing Failed: your Apple Watch couldn't pair with your iPhone" and it gave me the option to try again. Which I did, and came up with the same result every time. (P.S. both my iPhone and Apple Watch are up to date in terms of software updates).

Hi

Follow these steps to pair your watch manually:

  • Check that Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone: Settings > Bluetooth.
  • Check that your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or to a cellular network: Settings > Wi-Fi.
  • Ensure that both devices are charged.
  • Wear your watch on your wrist and choose a language.
  • Separately on each device, tap on Start Pairing (on your iPhone, do this within the Watch app).
  • Tap Pair Apple Watch Manually on your iPhone.
  • Tap the info icon "i" on your watch. Your device's name should be displayed on the watch face.
  • On your iPhone, tap the device name matching that shown on your watch.
  • A six-digit code will be displayed on your watch. Enter that code on your iPhone to pair the two devices.
  • Then follow the remaining steps as prompted to Set Up.

It may help to restart your iPhone and to force restart your watch: press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for around 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

The issue may be due to your devices being affected by wireless / Bluetooth interference. If so, it may help before pairing to move both devices to a different location, further away from any other active Bluetooth or wireless devices. If possible, also reduce the number of active Bluetooth devices nearby.

If the issue persists, contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available) or make a Genius Bar reservation with a view to having your watch checked under warranty:
