Macbook turns grey and shuts down

Every time I try and start up my computer, the apple logo and the spinning wheel comes up on a grey screen along with an empty bar at the bottom. It shuts off after about 30 seconds. Does anyone have an idea what's going on with it? Thanks ahead of time!
