I used to be able to get rid of this look by pressing command escape. That does not work now. Please help! Thanks! more

Command-option-escape is used to force-quit applications. You say you used command-escape, which I can't find among the standard keyboard shortcuts.

Review those options. The default selections are de-selected and "Normal". For example, "Invert Colors" might cause what you are describing.
This presumes there is no hardware fault responsible for the appearance of odd colors.
