MY screen looks like an Andy Warhol painting ... Used to be able to get rid of this by pressing down command then esc. Just downloaded el Capitain now that resolution does not work
please help!

(Apple menu) > System Preferences... > Accessibility > Display.
Review those options. The default selections are de-selected and "Normal". For example, "Invert Colors" might cause what you are describing.
This presumes there is no hardware fault responsible for the appearance of odd colors.
Not sure what the problem is, by your description alone. Can you post a screenshot?
Command-option-escape is used to force-quit applications. You say you used command-escape, which I can't find among the standard keyboard shortcuts.
