Are you trying to update to iPhoto 9.6.1?

The update tab of the AppStore does no longer work for iPhoto, because Apple stopped the developement and is no longer selling it.

You can only update by reinstalling iPhoto, and it will only work, if you own an AppStore version of iPhoto. You can no longer update iPhoto versions that came on installer disks and have not been associated with your AppleID at the AppDtore.

Check if iPhoto is showing in your Purchases history at the AppStore - the fourth tab. If you are seeing it there, you can update by reinstalling:

  • Delete the old iPhoto application from your Applications folder, but don't empty the Trash.
  • Reload the Purchases tab of the AppStore by pressing ⌘R
  • Now you shold be seeing "Install" to the right of iPhoto - press this button.

Does that work?
