Q: Important Request from Apple re: Unable to Install Safari 9.0.3 Update

Please see this thread below for specifics. Read the initial problem by Pmintz25, scroll through & read for others having the same problem, then read my, lablady's replies and updates! I have cut and pasted my postings here (I hope that is alright) which outlines the same problem that Pmintz25 and others are having.

This is important! The Apple Tech Supervisor I've spoken to said it would be a good idea to post my suggestion of others calling in with this problem (when I told him about this thread), so he can report to the Engineers that it's a more widespread problem than they think. He and they are still trying to figure out why Safari 9.0.3 isn't installing via the App Store. When I told him about this thread & the school districts (so dozens, if not hundreds or more!!, of computers that are having this problem), he said everyone really should call in to let Apple know. Once they're flooded with calls about this, they'll realize they need to look deeper for the solution and push out a solution for all of us.


It won't cost you to call in and report a glitch. Make sure you tell them you are notifying them of an issue with the App Store and the January 19th Safari 9.0.3 update so it's not YOUR problem. Make sure they won't charge you for the call. They didn't for me. Be courteous and patient and be prepared to spend 30-60 minutes so the supervisor can go through the regular/basic "fixes" before they ask to screen share and then Capture Data for the Engineering Dept.

    I, too, found this glitch in the App Store on January 19, 2016, and called and spoke to someone at Apple last week. Since it's a bug in their system, I don't/didn't have to pay for the Apple Care call.

     

    I spent about 2 hours on the phone going over all scenarios, logging out of App store & relogging in, downloading Safari, checking it's version (still at 9.0.2)-- the install simply wouldn't take for the January 19th update. We also did a Safe Mode procedure as someone mentioned in this thread, all to no avail. The Safari Update 9.0.3 continues to try to install at least twice a day since Jan. 19th, says it does (but it really doesn't) and continues to say I need to install it. Definitely something wonky. He asked for screenshots of my App Store where he could see all the "installs" and the awaiting notification that it needed to be installed. He was going to contact an Apple engineer about this.

     

    The Apple supervisor, Roy, said we shouldn't have to upgrade to El Capitan to have this Safari work, it was made for :"OS X Mavericks v10.9.5, OS X Yosemite v10.10.5, OS X El Capitan v10.11 to v10.11.2" according to this page: Apple security updates - Apple Support

     

    Unfortunately, since I reinstalled Mavericks on his suggestion (it took almost 4 hours to do!!), it has reverted my Safari back to version 7.0.6 and since there have been many security updates since then, I can no longer use Safari as my browser until this gets fixed. I can't even find version 9.0.2 to update to anywhere online and I believe, it deleted a bunch of important bookmarked sites. So, if you re-installed your OS X, check your version of Safari! If it's not version 9.0.2, I wouldn't use it, for security reasons. Just my opinion.

     

    I put in a call to Roy the next day (last Saturday, a normal work day for him) but never received a return call. I sent him two emails letting him know the reinstall didn't work & what happened to Safari. I also sent him additional screenshots of my App store as it keeps trying to install 9.0.3 daily. Interestingly enough, I don't have my App Store set to automatically install updates of anything. I have it set so it notifies me and I manually choose to install the updates. For some reason, this glitch is overriding that setting and continues to try to install this update.

     

    Last week, he seemed to agree with me that this was a glitch in programming somewhere on Apple's side, esp. after troubleshooting every possible scenario with no positive results.

     

    I just left a message for Roy today, January 30, 2016 (it's been a week now) letting him know about this thread. I had already told him I knew of people who were running into this same glitch/problem.

     

    I'll let you know as soon as I hear from him about a fix. Hang in there!

    UPDATE: 7:54pm EST from lablady:

     

    I just got done speaking with another Senior Supervisor at Apple, he tried one thing more...searching for a specific folder that didn't exist and should. That's when he knew this problem needed to go to the Engineers. We did a Capture Data of the Safari 9.0.3 Update/Install to send to them, so they could review the data log. He said they work on weekends, we might hear something tonight but he said give them until Monday to see if they've figured it out.

     

    He will call me on Monday at 2:30pm EST (unless he hears something sooner) to see if they've corrected the problem. I gave him the url to this post so, if needed, he and/or the engineers could see that many people (if not everyone) is having trouble with this update.

     

    I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything. Meanwhile, I'll be keeping my eyes open for news of an App Store fix/update. lol

    UPDATE: February 1, 2016 (Monday) at 5:49pm EST from lablady: Ok, after posting here, I may be creating a new thread and referring people to this one. Hope that's okay. Heard back from Lando, Supervisor at Apple, as promised at 2:45pm EST today. He was told by the engineers to have me delete a couple of temporary files, restart the computer in Safe Mode, install the Safari 9.0.3 update from the App store & see if it works. I'd already done this on my own and with the previous supervisor but did it once again. And, once again, it didn't work, the problem still persists. Lando also looked for a certain file/folder in my computer which didn't exist which was very puzzling and he said, rare. I again informed him of this thread and that if people are complaining about this issue from school districts then that means that dozens of schools within that ONE district had dozens or hundreds of computers and they are ALL having this issue, then it's more widespread than Apple knows. He said he hoped that more people would call in then the engineers will realize that it's not just me or a few of us having problems. It's much bigger. I also told him people were simply ignoring the App Store telling them they need to install it when it "says" it is installed (when, in fact, it isn't --- remember check your About Safari for the version. It should read Version 9.0.3 as of this date. If it's still 9.0.2 or earlier, it didn't take. It's not working.) or are fearful they'll have to pay to report it.

    So...I'm putting a call out to everyone in this thread and others: If you are having this issue, call Apple!! It is THEIR issue, not your computer's issue so you don't need to pay the $50 for technical assistance. You are notifying them of a glitch in their App Store.That's how I worded it. Tell them exactly what's happening, they will probably have to take you through a variety of basic steps and "fixes" before bumping it to the supervisor or the engineers. Actually, I'd ask to speak to Lando, Supervisor in Texas, if you can...or at least ask to speak to a supervisor right away. They'll end up doing s screen share, sending you a Data Capture to send to engineers. Unfortunately, this will take about an hour of your time...maybe less if more people call in with the same problem, they'll know to skip to the Data Capture immediately rather than a last effort to forward to the engineering team. He's bumping the issue back up to the Engineering department, realizes its something with this update and the App Store. Something's not right. He wants people to call in with this issue so they can gather more data. I hope this is helpful!
