Hi, I've recently purchased a WD Passport 3TB and formatted it. When formatted I attempted to partition it in two (one for general use - MS DOT and the other for Time Machine - OS Extended) but it wont allow me to. Can someone please advise me on what I shuld do?

Backups on one physical disk alone. Data usage and *especially* mixing PC data with Mac data on other disks.
You do not want to risk your backup with general-data-mixing.
Another thought ... you do not just one backup. That is running too slim. You want two copies of the backup. I use CarbonCopyClone ($40, bombich.com) as a bootable copy of the internal drive. This allows booting the system from the external in time of need. TM + CCC as backups is far safer.
