On some of my photos a small i in a circle appears at the bottom right of the image. I cannot enlarge, edit or export these files. Is there anything I can do to access these files?

I have a 2007 macbook pro OS X 10.6.8 with 4GB of memory. On some of my photos in iphoto a small i in a circle appears at the bottom right of the image when I select it. I cannot enlarge, edit or export these files. When I enlarge or try and export, the image just goes black or black with a grey exclamation point in the middle, and when I try and drag and drop to my desk top I just get a circle with a line through it next to the image and it won't deposit. The images look fine in thumbnail. Is there anything I can do to access these files?
