Accessing iphone 5 without 4 digit pin?

I have purchased a sim for my son to use in my husband's IPhone 5....however, none of us can remember the 4 digit pin on the phone and it is locked and telling me to connect to iTunes. When I connect to iTunes, the device doesn't appear and it appears as an unknown device in my PC's control panel. Can anyone help me?
