Q: Apple TV 3 - Freezes, reboots, lags for no reason

After the last update I noticed our a1427 device started to lag a bit.

it is now unusable. The device will freeze up, reboot even when I try and go into the settings.

i have done the whole tturn it off at the wall thing, tried using Ethernet rather than wifi etc. nothing is working. I fear I have a dud device after the update (...thanks)

the the device is used for Netflix and home sharing, with a bit of AirPlay. If the device is just sitting idle for more than 5 minutes or so it will reboot itself.

is this common? Can I fix this thing?

Have you tried an iTunes restore? I have the ATV2,3&4 and haven't had any issues like your experiencing...

Does it do this if you test it on another network and TV.

it does it on any tv. Can't check different networks as I can't get into the settings app. But it does in both Ethernet and wifi

To try it on another network, you'd need to take it to a friends or something.

Not to brag, but I have multiple networks and multiple televisions going into and near my home.

Nothing works

So a unit that suddenly decided to brick itself by not going into apps and resetting every 5 minutes after a mandatory update are my premises, wondering if this is common before I make my own inference

do I just plug in the usb thingy into the Mac and it pops up on the oi' iTunes?

Take a look at the link I sent. I think the most imortant thing is to make sure it's a "data" cable and not just a "charging" cable...

Here's what you need
A computer with iTunes
A high-speed Internet connection
A USB-C cable for Apple TV (4th generation) or a Micro-USB cable for Apple TV (3rd generation or earlier)

Im back home now, did an iTunes restore. trying to say that this solve my problem. It did! hopefully it comes up as this is doing all sorts of weird stuff on my iPad. Next time I'll read some troubleshooting! Thank you Protodd
