Q: Connecting an Apple Display to an iMac?

I have an Apple 27inch display which has a combined connection cable on it with both the Thunderbolt and MagSafe power connectors, I use this display on a work MacBook Pro, no problem.

But, I can't get it to work on an older iMac which has only the TB monitor port and no support for the Magsafe part!.

Ive tried to connect it using just a TB cable and just ignoring the MagSafe power connector but nothing works..!.

Can it be done ?

The older iMac may have Mini DisplayPort instead of Thunderbolt. The connectors look the same. A Mini DisplayPort display will work with a Thunderbolt computer but a Thunderbolt display won't work with a Mini DisplayPort computer.
