I just updated to a new iMac with thunderbolt 2 ports. My existing My Passport Studio external drive connected to the old iMac with a Firewire 800 cable. Can I connect the old external drive to my new iMac? What cable do I need?

You need a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter. Apple provides one in THIS link. You will also need a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable. You can find these on Ebay, Amazon etc. for less than $10USD.
If you have the FW 800 cable from the external drive, that should plug into a Thunderbolt adapter - I've been using that for a year now (ever since I got the new iMac).
