For a retina MBP, you will need a PENTALOBE driver to take off the bottom plate. You should be able to find it at Amazon.com.

Not only the warranties but possibly ever getting Apple to look at the computer again even out of warranty. I'd say if you have anything inside of the 5 year time window when Apple will service something that you have them look at it unless you really think you can do it yourself and take responsibility for all future care yourself.

Limnos is correct.

They may not even run Apple Diagnostics at the store if they notice you've messed with the computer.

Also you can't be eligible for any current or future recalls. Back when I had a white 2006 MacBook, there was a replacement program from Apple for anyone who had a MacBook that was splitting near the trackpad. It was a known issue with the MacBooks and they would replace it for free even on computers that were a number of years out of warranty. My 2006 MacBook didn't have AppleCare and it was at least 4 years old when I had the part replaced.

So if there is ever a replacement program for faulty cables or hard drive failures tied to your model of computer, you may not be able to participate in the free repairs. Just a thought
