Unable to boot to bootcamp after partitioning El Capitan

Hi Loner T,

I have recently partitioned the drive where OSX El Capitan is currently installed. Now, upon pressing the Option Key on start up, I cannot select my Bootcamp partition to boot.
Here is info re: my product:

Here is information re: my volumes:

  • I have OSX installed on a partition 'Macintosh SSD' in a 500GB SSD
  • Files are on a partition 'Macintosh HD' in a 1TB HDD
  • I have Windows Bootcamp installed on an NTFS partition 'SOLID' in the same 500GB SSD
  • and another NTFS partition for Windows Files 'LIQUID' in the same 1TB HDD
  • I also have a new partition (which lead to my very problem) 'ScratchDisk' in the same 500GB SSD

Both 'SOLID' and 'LIQUID' NTFS partitions are currently read-only i.e. "Owners: Disabled" in Disk Utility after having created a new partition 'ScratchDisk' for Photoshop in the same 500GB SSD, and SOLID won't show up on start up after pressing the 'Option key'.

I previously had Tuxera NTFS installed but uninstalled it.

Hereunder you will find the following information:

  • diskutil list
  • diskutil cs list
  • sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
  • sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

I thank you for patience and kindness from beforehand,

Cesco

I will assume that you want to keep ScratchDisk.

A. We need to disable SIP.

1. Boot into Local Recovery (Command+R).

2. Start Utilities -> Terminal.

3. Type csrutil disable in Terminal and press Enter/Return.

4. Type csrutil status.

5. Boot normally, and type csrutil status to confirm that all individual entries are still disabled.

B. Rebuild non-standard MBR.

The following steps are non-standard because there is a third user-visible partition. Typically, there are two such partitions in a normal configuration on a single-disk Mac with OS X and Bootcamp. This is fragile and lack of proper backups can lead to potential data loss. Download GPT Fdisk from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ and install it on the OS X side. The following steps are executed when booted in OS X.

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 10. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers. Please see thesample Q&A as an example. These steps can be repeated if you make a mistake before you get to Step 12, otherwise start from Step 1 for these steps. Step 6 has numbers which are typed with a space between the numbers. Please see the sample Q&A before you execute these steps.

  1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
  2. P (Print list of parts)
  3. R (Recover)
  4. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
  5. H (chooses Hybrid)
  6. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 3 4 5
  7. Y (Good for GRUB question)
  8. N (part 3 boot flag)
  9. N (part 4 boot flag)
  10. Y (part 5 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
  11. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
  12. W (Write the new MBR)
  13. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
  14. Reboot

Here is sample Q&A for this section. Please notice the Press Enter/Return. Accept defaults offered by Gdisk.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF or AB): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AB or 0B or 0C): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #5 (MBR partition #4)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

Yes I would like to keep the ScratchDisk partition, if in your opinion it would be beneficial for Photoshop dedication.

  1. Thank you for your in-depth reply. Will this solve for the "Owners: Disabled" message in Disk Utility for both LIQUID and SOLID? Or will this just solve for booting from SOLID?
  2. Having said this, would it be easier to simply erase both LIQUID and SOLID altogether and re-install Bootcamp? Furthermore, if yes, would it be possible to do this whilst retaining the ScratchDisk partition.

I will perform a Time Machine back up in the meantime.

Hi again Loner T,

I know this may be found as both tedious and rather absurd, however I have recently re-partitioned the aforementioned drives as mentioned per original post. Again, upon pressing the Option Key on start up, I now cannot select my Bootcamp partition to boot.

Here is current information re: my volumes:

  • OSX installed on partition 'Macintosh SSD' in a 500GB SSD
  • Files are still on partition 'Macintosh HD' in a 1TB HDD
  • Windows Bootcamp still installed on NTFS partition 'SOLID' in the same 500GB SSD
  • NTFS partition for Windows Files 'LIQUID' in the same 1TB HDD
  • New partition 'Scratch Disk' in the same 1TB HDD

Both 'SOLID' and 'LIQUID' NTFS partitions are again read-only i.e. "Owners: Disabled" in Disk Utility after having re-located the 'Scratch Disk' to the HDD.

On disk1, the order of the partitions si a bit unusual. Typically, it is EFI, OS X, Recovery HD, Bootcamp. If a new partition is created then it becomes EFI, OS X, Recovery HD, New Partition, Bootcamp. In your case The Recovery HD and New Partition (aka ScratchDisk) are interchanged.

Can you post the output of following command for the 1TB disk?

sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

Hey Loner T, the respective partitions 'SOLID' and 'LIQUID' are still "Disabled" in the Disk Utility, however both partitions show upon pressing the Option (Alt) key on restart. Managed to get in to 'SOLID' and access my BootCamp Windows OS.

Is it further possible to remove the 'LIQUID' partition's designation as a bootable drive please? (Not urgent)

Thank you for all your patience in advance,

Cesco
