Macbook laptop not going to sleep, getting hot, battery dead

Macbook laptop, late 2008, 13 in., OSX 10.10.5 not going to sleep, getting very hot, battery dies, have to do hard reboot to get it going

MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Yes, Ginger, when I close the lid, and I have been hearing the fan ramp up. While I was waiting for a reply I found another article that suggested checking the share tab in system preferences and uncheck what is there. The only thing checked was printer sharing so i unchecked it and I have had no trouble since. If it comes back again, I will try the smc reset you suggested. Thanks so much!
