If possible, use an Ethernet cable to connect your iMac to Internet.

If you aren’t using an AirPort router you may be surprised to discover how outdated the firmware is. Also look around the house for things that might be interfering - Microsoft, wireless phone, baby monitor for example. The placement of the router can also have a big impact.
