You can link your apple id for imessaging, but not text messaging.

If you want to add another email address to messages go to Settings>Messages>Send and Receive>You can be reached by iMessages at>Add another email. Your Apple ID email address should already be in there when you sign in, since you have to use the ID to activate iMessages.
