iCal auto-deselects "all day"

For several months, my iCal has been auto-deselecting "all day" for calendar events. I select the "all day" checkbox, select calendar event color, write my text describing the calendar event and close the window. iCal saves the calendar event color, but deletes all of the text I wrote and de-selects 'all day' to make the calendar event limited to a particular time of day (usually 9am, regardless of the time of day I write the calendar event).

I'm using Mavericks 10.9.5. I may be one of the rare few who really likes skeuomorphism, but I hate the look of Yosemite and haven't 'upgraded.' This may be the cause of the problem, but if it's not, I'd love to know if anyone has a solution within Mavericks for this problem.

Thanks for any help I can get with this!
