Poor selection in app store

I'm still fairly new to MacBooks, so please forgive my lack of knowledge 😊

I have an iPhone, which I love, but am decidedly ambivalent about the MacBook. There really isn't much a selection of apps in the store, not even BBC iPlayer. Is there a reason for this?
