Replacement AEBS Power Supply?

Hi there, folks

I have an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) Model #A1034 without a power supply.

I am having problems/troubles sourcing a compatible universal power adapter.

I have searched using the following info: 5V DC/3A (3000mA)/15W. Amazon/Best Buy/Micro Center/Radio Shack/Walmart/etc., NO Soap! 😕

I have thought of going to the local Apple Store and asking about a suitable replacement AEBS power supply, but they would probably tell me to purchase a new AEBS instead. 😠

Maybe a "newer" AEBS power supply would have comparable output? 😕

I have a digital multi-meter @ the ready... 😎

My particulars: iBook SE (PowerBook2,2) with AirPort (802.11b)/OS X 10.4.11.

Any insight/input/info would be greatly appreciated 🙂🙂

Thank You for your time, James

Bob has given you the easy way..

Any insight/input/info would be greatly appreciated

Let me give you the mad electronics man method.

Since the Extreme is not going to live forever and buying another power supply for it might be a waste of money.. try a converter..

Simply snip the wire from the current power supply.. there is miles of it. ( well more than enough).

Buy a power module..

These modules are fantastic.. I use heaps of them in my repair of Time Capsule work. It is rated at 5v and 5A. It is also about 90-95% efficient.

You don't even need a soldering iron.. simply screw the cables into the connector.. and power it from any 15W supply from 12-35v

To make it even more useful.. buy one that has USB ports on it.

Then you can use it a phone charger as well.

If you buy a standard 2.1mm or 2.5mm DC socket, you can plug the power supply straight into it.

Like so. In case you think I would ask you to do something I wouldn't.

Here is my module used (with a 12v apple supply from a later Extreme.. just added for whiteness!!)

I proceeded to cut the cable from the old AE Power Supply and remove about 2cm of outside insulation.. shield is -ve.. and a few mm of the +ve inner core.

Then screwed it into the power supply on the output side.

You can now use your old airport as well as charge your phone and ipad and whatever else.

I am on a crusade to get rid of multiple voltages and run all DC stuff on 12v.

This could even be installed inside the airport as there is a fair amount of space in the top..
