how do I listen to music I downloaded?

Hi, I'm not computer saavy. I called Apple and asked how to download music, but I don't know how to listen to it. I went to my play list and there wasn't a list but all the albums, songs, etc. I just downloaded a few songs. I clicked on the songs but it didn't play. My husband wants to put music on ipod touch, and listen when he goes to bed. Can anyone give me the steps to learn how to do these things? Thank you SO much.
