So, you are going in to settings, then iCloud; from here, do you sign out with the old Apple ID?  If you sign out with the Apple ID that was originally signed in when the phone was set up, then that same email address usually stays in the iCloud setting (although the password will be blank) until you successfully sign in with another, valid Apple ID.  You can check that your newer Apple ID and password are correct by signing in on the link below.

If you can sign in there successfully, then you have a valid Apple ID and should be able to sign in to the iCloud section on your device.  If you can't sign in there, then you may have an incorrect password, or you may be using the wrong email address.

Can I ask why you're changing your iCloud account?  I only ask to check if you're doing the right thing...  iCloud is used for backing up your data and syncing your (multiple) devices.

Thanks Gareth. When I go into iCloud on my new iPhone 5 to sign IN it shows my old ID and password. I can sign into iCloud on my PC successfully with my new ID. I have tried entering my new ID but it keeps reverting back to the old one. I have the same problem on my iPad! I have checked in Support and it suggests changing my ID temporarily to the old one, but I really don't want to do that.

Sorry, I should add that I would use iCloud to sync my calendars on all devices.

Actually, the first thing I should have suggested it to turn the phone off and on again, but you may have tried this already.

If you do temporarily sign in with your old one, it shouldn't affect anything on the device.  Once you sign out of it again, it will ask if you want to delete the data from that account.  Alternatively, you could try and reset your device, then try sign in with the newer account.  To do this, go to settings, then scroll right down to the bottom of the left-hand pane and choose reset.  Then choose 'Reset All Settings', but NOT 'Erase... '.  If you just choose 'Reset All Settings', you won't lose any data and hopefully, you will be able to sign in with any Apple ID.

Thanks again Gareth, I have tried the "on-off" trick to no avail, but will try the reset option!

Here is what I did to fix the same problem:

If iCloud asks you for the password to your previous Apple ID - Apple Support

Follow the directions for temporary password. It worked for me!!!

    Good luck!
