Does a screen protector interfere with swiping the face?
It seems ever since we applied the armor coat plastic screen protector, the red dot message icon doesn't work. Is this because of the protector?

You should not typically find that using a thin film-type screen protector interferes with use of the screen.
The red dot will only appear when you have notification alerts awaiting your attention in Notification Centre.
Even when it is empty, Notification Centre can still be opened by swiping down on the screen when viewing the time.
