Feb 5, 2016 12:37 PM in response to jakobsfilmby alex_h1,Hi jakobsfilm,
I understand you have checked your Mail preferences for the sound settings but still get no send or receive sounds.
Have you also checked the Notification preferences for Mail?
OS X El Capitan: Notifications preferences
Play sound for notifications
Let the app play notification sounds.
Did this happen after upgrading to El Capitan (with custom sounds)?
If custom alert sounds don't appear after upgrading to El Capitan - Apple Support
And I'm assuming the Sound Settings themselves are okay.
OS X El Capitan: Adjust your computer’s sound output settings
If all of those look good, please toggle the settings to see if they come back.
Best regards.

Feb 8, 2016 12:18 PM in response to alex_h1by jakobsfilm,Hi Alex_h1,
thanks for the response.
-notification prefs for mail are ok
-it happened with upgrade to ElCapitan. there is a Sounds folder in the top level library full with aiff-sounds (and a second library Sounds folder in my home folder, it's from 2005 and continues 1 aiff-file only). I never changed anything manually
-sound settings are ok. I hear other warning sounds. only not from mail.

Feb 9, 2016 7:00 AM in response to jakobsfilmby Nubz N.,Hi jakobsfilm,
If all the settings are okay and toggling them is no help, you may find more information by using another one of Apple's support resources - https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action
Best regards.

Feb 10, 2016 1:29 AM in response to Nubz N.by jakobsfilm,Thank you. I read the support article about the sound folders in the library folders. I copied the one sound folder into all three library folder that exist. Now the mail program "sees" them all three. And I can choose. But mail just won't play any sound, whereas all other apps play their sounds. :-(

Feb 18, 2016 3:30 AM in response to jakobsfilmby jakobsfilm,I found out that only Apple Mail doesnt send its sounds out through the headphones jack. When I disconnect my headphones or loudspeakers I can hear the Mail sounds from the MacBook speakers.
What does that mean?
