My iPad 2 shows that I have 361 unread messages - not true
MY pad shows I I have 361 messages which is not true. How can I get rid of them ?

I see that your Messages app is showing that you have a large number of unread messages when you don't. I have a couple of things for you to do to resolve this.
First, I would force quit the Messages app:
Then, restart your iPad:
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
