Is it possible to wirelessly transfer photos from a wifi equipped Nikon camera to the iPad mini?

You will have to read your camera manual. If Nikon supports wireless transfer, they should have an app in the app store. Take a look at this app:

No problem. A lot of wireless equipped cameras or memory cards (eg: EyeFi) provide free apps to transfer photos to tablet/smartphone devices.
