Basic Steps for Upgrading OS X

If you still have not upgraded, here are a series of steps you should follow in order to get the best upgrading results. These steps apply to any OS X upgrade, not just El Capitan.

  1. Repair the Hard Disk Drive and permissions.
  2. Update all third-party applications for compatibility, if needed - See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
  3. Backup your data. Or use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone your system to a backup drive.
  4. Verify the backup is where it should be. If you cloned verify the clone will boot the computer.
  5. Download the upgrade from the App Store.
  6. Before installing make a copy of the installer for safe keeping.
  7. install the upgrade.
