Airport Extreme will not connect to Verizon FIOS

I recently had to unplug everything (TV, router, Extreme, etc...) in order to reorganize furniture. Prior to this I connected to my network via my Extreme and not the FIOS router. FIOS works fine, I can set up the Extreme but they won't connect. I have done different versions of this:

- Unplug router, turn off computer

- disconnect ethernet from AE

- unplug AE

- wait 5, 10, 30 mins...

- plug in modem

- wait a few minutes

- plug in AE (sometimes with ethernet plugged in, sometimes not)

- turn on computer

How can I get them to talk to each other? I have done it for years with Comcast, Time Warner, FIOS and every time it seems to be something different that works.
