I use a 2009 macbook pro laptop running Yosemite. I've always had a grey semicircle about 1/2" at its maximum along the bottom of the screen. It has light blue dots in two areas of the semicircle. What causes this, and can I remove it?

Since the laptop is pretty old I assume a fix would involve a cost...I've lived with the grey semicircle for a long time, so I suppose I'll keep living with it. Thanks, tho.
Have you ever tried erasing the drive and installing OS X from scratch, just in case it is a software problem? You might try this:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Boot into Safe Mode, then boot normally.
