Q: Please insert disk into removable disk D

When I try to sync my ipod, an error comes up that says - Please insert disk into removable disk D. I've tried to this:

Hold Select+Menu on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Select+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Open iTunes and in the Sync tab of the preferences menu checkDisable automatic syncing of all iPhones & iPods. Now connect your iPod to the computer, wait until it connects, then close iTunes. But there isn't a SYNC tab in preferences so I couldn't complete this task.

Then I tried: for Windows: Browse My Computer and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. Under Check disk options, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. But my ipod doesn't show up in MY COMPUTER so I couldn't complete this task either.

Please help, I just added 36 songs to itunes that I can't put on my ipod.

Seems like iTunes (or Windows) is confusing your iPod for a device that it expects as the D drive.  Or maybe that's how the iPod normally connects (as the D drive), but it currently appears as some other drive letter.  What version of Windows do you use?

One thing to try, to maybe help "reset" things...  Shut down the computer and disconnect all USB devices.  You can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected if used.  Do this to Reset (restart) your iPod.

Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support

Don't put it into Disk Mode (at least not yet).  Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the computer by itself.  Any difference when you try to sync iPod?

NOTE:  That procedure you described using a setting on iTunes preferences "Sync tab"...  I don't where that comes from (it must be a bit out-dated); in the current version of iTunes, that setting is on the Devices tab, and it says Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.
