iMac hangs then reboots

I have a mid-2015 27" iMac Retina 5k, running the latest public update of El Captain (10.11.3 I believe).

I use the internal 1TB HDD for file storage and boot off of a Thunderbolt Lacie 250GB solidstate. I've been running it this way no problem since I got this iMac, and ran it the same way for years previously on an older 21.5" iMac too.

I was using my iMac with remote control software today and it was working fine, as usual. When I got home and physically tried to use my iMac, I noticed that it was powered off which is unusual as I have it set to stay on all the time (for remote access), and if it experiences a power outage to automatically reboot.

So I turned it on, the boot progress bar gets to about 2/3 then hangs and eventually reboots itself after a few minutes. This'll go on with no change.

So I tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM - no change.

Tried resetting SMC - no change.

Booted into Recovery Mode no problem, ran Disk Utility's first aid on both drives with no problems - no change.

Tried the Apple Diagnostic test by holding "D". Found no issues. No change.

Tried holding Shift to boot into safe mode. Loading bar got to 2/3 then screen goes black, a mouse cursor appeared, then nothing else happened.

Tried Single User mode then ran "fsck -fy" which returned "file system has been modified" so I ran it again which returned "appears to be ok", so I rebooted which got me to 2/3 and then a black screen with no other progress or mouse.

Tried verbose mode, but it only appears on the screen for about 2 seconds, runs through a bunch of lines, then disappears to a black screen and goes nowhere.

Any other steps I can try before I reinstall OSX, as obviously I'd rather not have to do that?

After a few more attempts at booting my iMac, which failed, then trying to boot into Safe Mode, it eventually loaded my login screen in Safe Mode.

So I was able to run EtreCheck:

EtreCheck version: 2.9.3 (253)

Download EtreCheck from http://etrecheck.com

Runtime 1:22

Performance: Excellent
