Displaying desktop on projector

I often give PowerPoint presentations from my MacBook Pro using a projector - once I am in slide show mode the presentation always appears OK on the screen. However, I seem unable to show my desktop on screen once I am no longer in slide show mode in ppt and unable, for instance, to show webpages or videos from a browser. 'Displays have separate Spaces' in Mission Control is checked.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

I see that you wish to present your desktop to a connected projector. The computer sees the projector as a connected display, so the following article should be of most use to what you want to do.
