Strange unlock screen

After installing iOS 9.2.1 the unlock screen changed to a normal keyboard format - like messages. The numbers were much smaller but I assumed that Apple unlock had gone "alphanumeric". Didn't like it -but!

Yesterday I had to reset my phone by turning it off.

Eureka- the unlock screen was back to the normal big buttons.

What has been occurring here...............?
