How do I delete videos from my hard drive?

My MacBook Air (10.10.5 - OS X Yosemite) is full - just about all 120 GBs. I have downloaded everything to an external drive and thought I would delete my videos from my hard drive to free up about 35 GBs. I don't seem to be able to delete the videos by selecting and hitting delete key or by dragging videos to trash. Any suggestions?
